Fans keep saying FROM's biggest clues were hidden in the very first episode. Ever since, that episode has been picked apart frame by frame.

Here are the five strongest theories after season 4.

1. There is no such thing as a monster

In the trailer scene of the first episode, Ethan is upset by the story of Norman's death. Tabitha comforts him with a single line: "There is no such thing as monsters. So Norman didn't die either."

On first watch it sounds like an ordinary thing a mother would say. But what if that line is the biggest clue the show has been saving for its finale?

2. Can Julie really change the past?

The season 3 finale revealed that Julie does not merely see the past, she can physically step into it. That raised the show's biggest question. If Julie can travel back, can she go back before the children were sacrificed?

Or is it the other way round: are some of the events we witnessed in the past already the result of what Julie will do in the future? This is where things get tangled at Dark levels.

3. The town punishes those who look for answers

Jim puts up an antenna, a storm hits the town. Tabitha digs beneath the house, the house collapses. Boyd gets close to the truth, Martin appears and every rule changes.

It is as if the town allows only one thing: you may survive, but do not try to learn the truth. That is why many viewers think the town behaves like a living organism. It is not interested in people's fears, but in their curiosity.

4. The Boy in White and the Man in Yellow have been fighting the same war for years

One of the most discussed scenes of the season 4 finale was the moment the two of them came face to face. The Boy in White says only this: "This time you will lose."

The key words there are "this time." They suggest the same struggle has played out before. Under this theory neither of them is good or evil in the classic sense. One is trying to break the loop while the other keeps it running.

5. The only way out of town may be to die

As Tabitha searches for a way out, the Boy in White tells her one thing: "This is the only way." Then he pushes her off the lighthouse. Tabitha opens her eyes in the real world.

But what if the fall is not the reason? What if the only way out of town is to die at the lighthouse? Under this theory the lighthouse is not a portal, only the door of a death that happens in the right place.

Maybe what we take for death in FROM is the exit from the story itself. Which one is right?
